"The Indomitable Rise of Kat Wright"

"If you were putting together the X-Men, you wouldn't want seven people that shot lasers from their eyes," says Hamilton. "Everybody has their superpower in this band, and that's what we were trying to bring out.

"The rhythm section plus that guitar sound is what's making the band cook," he continues. "And then you add Kat's vocals and the wild-card keyboard player and these beat-up horns — and I mean that lovingly. To me, there was a chemistry that was obvious from the outside, but nobody had seen it yet."

Gone is the vivid but unwieldy name Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band; the new album, while featuring the seven standout musicians who support her, represents a streamlined Kat Wright as she hones in on how she wants to be heard."

"Do your soul a favor: See Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band in Syracuse"

"If you've ever seen Wright live, you know she can belt out notes with vigor, but she often saves her power for a few golden moments in each song. Her range oscillates from delicate to gritty, before reaching a startling climax... Backed by her Vermont octet of horns, drums and strings, Wright might prompt comparisons to another tiny brunette with a big voice and backing band: Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. It's a fair connection, though Wright delivers more calm, controlled melismas instead of Arleigh Kincheloe's raspy roars."

And it hurts a little ... like it should." - Frank DeBlase

LOCALVORE TODAY

"Kat Wright & the Indomitable Soul Band are in the midst of “blowing up” – they’ve been hitting the New England circuit for the past several years, and the dividends are starting to show. The group opened for The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Grace Potter, Leon Russell, and others; they’ve performed at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City... On Friday night, the band’s travels brought them to the grand Port City Music Hall.

It’s easy to see why Kat Wright is catching on. The show began instrumentally without Kat, a chance for the Indomitable Soul Band to flex their collective muscle. Maine residents might be tempted to compare the band’s instrumentation to that of the Rustic Overtones – drums, bass, electric guitar, organ, and a three-piece horn section. But as soon as Kat hit the stage, it was clear who was the driving force of the band.

Kat brings a sleek confidence to the band’s soul sound, with her vocals serving as the exclamation point to a impeccably tight & polished band. The blend of soul, funk, blues, and rock, a mix of originals and classics, and the band’s classy stage presence all helped win over the Portland crowd quite quickly."

"It's been nearly a year since Rochester native Kat Wright and her Indomitable Soul Band made their Syracuse debut. And what a debut it was...

Though the titular "soul" moniker aptly sums up the group's style, their allure is much broader. With a troupe of bluesy jazz horns at her back, Wright croons with a big-band sound and pop-rock swagger. It's something, she says, that resonates with everyone from young kids to their grandparents."

ALBUM REVIEW

"The problem with a lot of soul bands is when they get too regimented in their pursuit of pure soul. And there are others who just set themselves up for a fall when incorporating soul into their name. The Burlington-based Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band has neither of those pitfalls to sweat about. The band started up in 2010 and is fronted by the Rochester-born singer Wright, who despite her flexibly gorgeous contralto offers so much more than soul histrionics and window-dressing."

ALBUM REVIEW

"Now regarded as rising stars both in Vermont and beyond, Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul band have released their debut EP, a six-song teaser or orignal soul music appropriately titled Introducing...

As anyone who has seen the band live can attest, KW&ISB would seem well suited for the "retro-soul" tag affixed to the vintage stylings of artists such as Sharon Jones, early Mayer Hawthorne and the late Amy Winehouse. Indeed, the album's opening cut, "All About  You," not only affirms but embraces that notion with smoky horns and a backbone-slipping groove... It introduces Kat Wright as both a powerhouse capable of full-throated howling and a sensuous chanteuse who can purr like a kitten."

GLIDE MAGAZINE

"The diminutive figure of the front lady belied the sound of the band but gave credence to its name. The group has moved beyond merely covering the R& B roots of their sound to include original material and, in so doing, they’re moving into the realm of supreme stylists. Kudos to Kat for her vocal restraint—she never engages in diva-type histrionics—while local guitar hero Bob Wagner drives home the emotional point(s) of her singing. As Wright so sagely observed, appearing at events like Grand Point North is altogether different than the usual local venues, and its the kind of higher profile occasion right in line with their evolution."

FEAST OF MUSIC

A Journey thru the music of New York, and occasionally other places

"Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band @ The Radio Bean in Burlington, Vermont"

BURLINGTON, Vermont - Last week, I returned to my former home of six years, where I had the pleasure of catching Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band (I.S.B.) at The Radio Bean last Thursday night. The Radio Bean has long been celebrated as Burlington's eclectic anti-venue, the joint that offers some of the city's best live music in a friendly, relaxed environment.

When Ms. Wright, a native of Rochester, NY, moved to Burlington a few years ago for a change of scenery, she surrounded herself with some of northern New England's finest players, including musicians from nationally touring acts including The Trey Anastasio Band, Strength in Numbers, and The Jake Whitesell Quartet. Since December 2010, the I.S.B. band has held the coveted Thursday night set at the Bean, matching soul classics with original compositions - no easy task with nine musicians living nine separate lives.

The setlist last week included tunes by Curtis Mayfield, Hall and Oates, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and more. "These are the songs from my childhood," Wright told me. "I grew up listening to soul."

Through both visual and aural communication, the I.S.B. navigated the curvaceous material, full of peaks and valleys and stragecially placed breakdowns. Although the horn section and the Rhodes were mixed way too high relative to the vocals, Ms. Wright's stage presence and spirited delivery shone through and embodied the essence of soul: strong, independent, intelligent, and sexy.

Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band is a soul band. They do what they do, and they do it well. If you even happen to find yourself in Burlington on a Thusday night, go check them out.

NOR'EASTER MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

Indubitably indomitable. The Burlington, VT area Kat Wright & the Indomitable Soul Band create music that has something in common with their name. Size. Their sound is so big and emotionally charged that it floods the room and practically overflows out the venue doors, leaving in it’s wake an audience that’s bobbing and dancing to the groove.

The secret behind this big, soulful sound? It starts with Kat Wright’s vocals. Powerful, gritty and capable of expressing subtle, delicate emotions– Kat was born to sing blues and soul music. And behind her, or rather completely surrounding her, is a lineup that features bass, drums, percussion, guitar, organ, trumpet, trombone and alto sax. At their upcoming Nor’easter performance you may hear some soulful, grooving renditions of Frankie Valli, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Stevie Wonder.
